Crowley Christens the US' First Electric Tug eWolf
Crowley on Tuesday christened its new vessel, eWolf, the first all-electric ship assist tugboat in the United States... Vessel owners and operators are increasingly considering hybrid and full electric vessels as part of efforts to reduce emissions. Crowley said the eWolf replaces a conventional tug that consumes more than 30,000 gallons of diesel per year and is expected to eliminate emissions equivalent to 350,000 gallons of gasoline, according to EPA calculations, over the first 10 years of operation. {Link to article} |
Textron Delivers LCAC 109 to the US Navy
The U.S. Navy reports it has taken delivery of the latest Ship to Shore Connector (SSC), Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC) 109 from Textron Systems. The May 29 delivery of LCAC 109 comes after completion of acceptance trials conducted by the Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey, which tested the readiness and capability of the craft to effectively meet its requirements. “This new craft will provide the Navy and Marine Corps team with unparalleled capability in amphibious warfare, ensuring we remain agile and responsive to emerging threats and global challenges,” said Capt. US Navy accepts USNS Earl Warren
On May 7, the U.S. Navy accepted the delivery of the 746’x106’x33.5’ John Lewis-class fleet replenishment oiler, the USNS Earl Warren (T-AO 207). Delivery follows the successful completion of Integrated Sea Trials to test the readiness and capability of the ship and to validate requirements... “Delivery of the third ship in the class will bring more refueling capability directly to the fleet, including replenishment underway capacity.” Lighthammer continued, “The civilian mariners who crew this ship will have the tools they need to operate in often rapidly changing environments.” {Link to article} |
Crescent Towing's new Tier 4 tug joins Port of Savannah operations
Crescent Towing recently took delivery of the M/V Angus R. Cooper II, a new 6,000 hp, Tier 4 z-drive tugboat constructed at Blakeley BoatWorks in Mobile, Ala., for their ship assist operations in the Port of Savannah, Ga. The 92’x38’x19’ tug is named in recognition of the longtime chairman and CEO of The Cooper Group, the parent company of Crescent and Blakely. It’s powered by twin Caterpillar 3516E tier 4 engines, each producing 3,004 hp to power Kongsberg 255 fixed pitch azimuthing drives (z-drives). {Link to article} To watch video of the Angus R. Bollinger delivers another FRC to U.S. Coast Guard
Bollinger Shipyards, Lockport, La., recently delivered the USCGC David Duren to the U.S. Coast Guard in Key West, Fla. This is the 182nd vessel Bollinger has delivered to the U.S. Coast Guard over a 35-year period and the 56th Fast Response Cutter (FRC) delivered under the current program. For the FRC, Bollinger is using a proven, in-service parent craft design based on the Damen Stan Patrol Boat 4708. Main propulsion comes from twin MTU 20V4000 M93L diesel engines, producing 2,900 hp each. {Link to article} |
Master Boat Builders delivers new tug to Seaside LNG/Polaris New Energy
Master Boat Builders Inc., Coden, Ala., has successfully delivered the 109' tug Tortuga, the latest tugboat to join Seaside LNG/Polaris New Energy’s expanding fleet. The Tortuga will operate out of Jacksonville, Fla., alongside her sister vessel, Polaris. “Seaside LNG/Polaris New Energy is leading the way in LNG maritime distribution, with the largest LNG bunker fleet in the country,” Garrett Rice, president of Master Boat Builders, said in a statement announcing the delivery. {Link to article} |

Swiftships lands $129 million patrol craft kits contract
Swiftships, Morgan City, La., announced a significant development in its collaboration with the Egyptian Navy, as the State Department approved additional funding for 93' Coast Patrol Craft (CPC) Kits and related equipment. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) recently confirmed its authorization for a Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to the Egyptian Government, including 93' Patrol Craft Kits and associated equipment. Crowley's All-electric Harbor Tug eWolf Delivered
Crowley on Wednesday announced it has taken delivery of its groundbreaking vessel eWolf, the first all-electric, ship assist harbor tugboat in the United States. The 82-foot tug, designed by Crowley’s engineering services team and built by Coden, Ala. shipbuilder Master Boat Builders, will enter service at the Port of San Diego this spring following final demonstration trials and completion of Crowley’s microgrid shoreside charging station. The much-needed replacement for the U.S. Coast Guard’s long-serving medium endurance cutters (WMEC) took a giant step closer to joining the fleet as the first Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC) was launched and christened at Eastern Shipbuilding Group (ESG) in Panama City, Fla. on October 27, 2023. The future USCGC Argus (WMSM 915) was christened by the ship’s sponsor, Captain (Ret.) SECNAV Del Toro Names Future Survey Ship After Titanic Discoverer Robert Ballard
A future Pathfinder-class oceanographic survey ship was named after the deep sea explorer who discovered the final resting place of RMS Titanic, the Navy announced on Wednesday. The future USNS Robert Ballard (T-AGS-67) was named by Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro named after the retired Navy commander who served as the former director of the Center for Ocean Exploration, according to a Navy news release issued Wednesday. Survey ships are typically named after explorers, marine surveyors or oceanographers, like Robert Ballard. {Link to article} |
HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding Christens Amphibious Assault Ship Bougainville (LHA 8)
HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division on Saturday christened the U.S. Navy’s third America-class amphibious assault ship Bougainville (LHA 8)... Bougainville is the second ship named in honor of Bougainville Island in the Solomons. The name commemorates a successful World War II campaign enabled by close coordination among the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Marine Corps and our allies. During the campaign, which lasted from 1943 to 1944, allied forces secured a strategic airfield from Japanese forces in the northern Solomon Islands, helping the allies break the Japanese stronghold in the South Pacific. {Link to article} |

USCG Marks Milestone with Acceptance of 55th Fast Response Cutter
Bollinger Shipyards and the U.S. Coast Guard marked a milestone on Thursday as the Louisiana-based shipbuilder delivered the 55th Fast Response Cutter in a program that began 15 years ago and which the USCG expects to continue for several more years. On Friday, Eastern Shipbuilding christened and launched the long-awaited first hull in the Offshore Patrol Cutter (OPC) series, one of the U.S. Coast Guard's top acquisition priorities. After overcoming many challenges, including facility damage from a Category 5 hurricane, the yard has reached a major milestone toward delivering the first-in-class USCGC Argus... Huntington Launches US Navy’s Amphibious Assault Ship ‘Bougainville’
American shipbuilding firm Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) has launched the US Navy’s third America-class amphibious assault ship named “Bougainville.”... According to HII, the Bougainville is the first ship in the America class to be built with a well deck, supporting surface assault capability. The boat will have the same aviation capabilities as other ships within the class while adding a larger flight deck configured for the F-35B and MV-22 Osprey. {Link to article} |

Ingalls christens guided missile destroyer
Ingalls Shipbuilding, Pascagoula, Miss., held a christening earlier this week for the pre-commissioning unit Ted Stevens, a 505'x66' Flight III guided missile destroyer. Ingalls has delivered 35 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers to the U.S. Navy including the first Flight III, USS Jack H. Lucas (DDG 125), in June of this year. Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyers built for the U.S. Navy incorporate a number of design modifications that collectively provide significantly enhanced capability. {Link to article} |

Bollinger delivers Coast Guard cutter
Bollinger Shipyards, Lockport, La., delivered the 53rd fast response cutter (FRC) to the Coast Guard in Key West, Fla. last week. The 154’ vessel, USCSC John Patterson, will be homeported in Sector Boston. Sector Boston services the area between Plymouth, Mass., and the New Hampshire-Massachusetts border, extending its operations 200 nautical miles offshore. This delivery is the fourth of six FRCs to be homeported in the region. {Link to article} |
Newest Littoral Combat Ship Honors Baseball Hall of Famers
On Sunday, the U.S. Navy commissioned the 12th Freedom-variant littoral combat ship, USS Cooperstown, named after the hometown of the Baseball Hall of Fame. The name was selected to honor the 70 Hall of Famers who served in the U.S. military in wartime, including World War I, World War II and the Korean War. "LCS 23 honors the baseball greats, who in service of our Nation, sacrificed their baseball careers for us. I have full confidence that the officers and crew of this great ship will continue to honor their legacy," said Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro in a ceremony in New York on Sunday. {Link to article} |

Burger Boat building 180' yacht on spec
Burger Boat Co. has announced that the superstructure has been set in place on the first of two 180’ Motor Yachts. The two Burger 180’ Motor Yachts are currently under construction at Burger’s shipyard in Manitowoc, Wis. While the first is sold, the second is available for sale, providing its new owner an opportunity to build their new yacht in the U.S. and add their custom touches to its design, shipyard officials said. {Link to article} |
